Recognizing Prior Learning (RPL) Program

The RPL Program can contributes to the recruitment and retention of a qualified CCA work force by supporting eligible individuals with valuable experience/education to gain CCA Certification. The Program can support employers to hire RPL participants through the CCA Education Entry to Practice Policy’s conditional hire clause by assisting employers in meeting conditional hire requirements. We can assist employers in understanding if a potential employee is eligible for RPL, help employers build a conditional hire education plan, and support the RPL participant and employer through the process.

The RPL Program is designed for individuals with work, education, or life experience in providing care. The process assists a person to gain recognition for their knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Experienced, eligible individuals interested in gaining CCA certification may qualify for one of two RPL methods – Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) or Course Recognition (CR). Both methods produce a learning path identifying any gaps in their knowledge, skills, and abilities which will require CCA education.

If a person can prove they possess certain knowledge and can perform certain skills, they should not have to repeat the learning.

Funding Available for RPL Participants

Department of Health and Wellness has provided RPL Assistance funding for eligible, employer endorsed individuals to enroll in RPL. The purpose of the RPL Assistance funding is to increase the provincial supply of CCAs by reducing financial barriers to accessing the RPL process and prioritizing areas of the province with the greatest unmet demand for CCAs.
